October Is National Orthodontic Health Month! Here Are Some Brace-Friendly Tips

Posted .

It’s October, and we’re excited to join the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) in celebrating National Orthodontic Health Month. Our goal is to promote orthodontic health and share valuable tips on orthodontic treatment to help you achieve a radiant and healthy smile!

Start the journey to a great smile by focusing on healthy, strong, and aligned teeth for a proper bite. Our mission is to work together with you to achieve a straight and healthy smile. We can adjust the position of the teeth and jaw using braces, clear aligners, and retainers. With orthodontic treatment, teeth can remain aligned for years. Orthodontics is suitable for children, teens, and adults.

Straight teeth aren’t only important for how they look. They also make it easier to clean teeth and gums thoroughly while brushing and flossing. A properly aligned bite and straight teeth are crucial for preventing dental decay and gum disease, which can otherwise result in tooth loss.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

  • You achieve your healthiest bite when your jaw is in the best position possible. This helps you avoid problems with biting, chewing, and speaking and also reduces the risk of sleep apnea.
  • Straightened teeth prevent scraping or grinding against each other, which can prematurely wear down tooth enamel or lead to future dental problems requiring costly treatments like crowns, bridges, implants, or dentures.
  • Attain a confident smile you’ll love to display instead of concealing it! Did you know that individuals with appealing smiles are often perceived as more successful in social and professional settings?

As you can see, orthodontics offers advantages that enhance your value of life!

National Orthodontics Month and Clearing Up Misconceptions

Thanks to the American Association of Orthodontists’ efforts, it’s clear to people that:

  • Dentists are not always orthodontists who can provide braces or aligners.
  • Orthodontics can be cheap.
  • Periodic orthodontic visits to monitor progress are essential parts of the treatment.
  • Orthodontic treatment does not need years to align teeth.
  • Orthodontic treatment goes beyond cosmetic enhancements.
  • Orthodontic treatment goes beyond cosmetic enhancements.
  • You have the option to select between braces or aligners to achieve your desired results.
  • Orthodontics isn’t limited to children and teenagers anymore; more adults than ever are straightening their teeth!

What You Can Do

  • Seek orthodontic treatment for your child while their jaw is still developing. This will help spot potential problems early. Don’t wait until your child loses all their baby teeth before visiting an orthodontist.
  • Seek orthodontic treatment if your smile does not make you happy; having straight teeth is possible at any age!

This National Orthodontic Health Month, we provide you with tips to maintain the safety of braces or other orthodontic appliances while preventing cavities.

  • Avoid snacking on hard, sticky, crunchy, or chewy candies and treats, whether it’s Halloween or any time. Stay away from foods like caramel, gummies, licorice, taffy, tootsie rolls, bubblegum, jelly beans, and sodas.
  • Be sure to avoid hard-shelled peanut candies, nuts, or candies filled with nuts, taco chips, popcorn, and ice.
  • Remember to brush and floss daily, especially when you have braces. Sugary, starchy, or acidic substances can accumulate around brackets and other parts of your braces, so it’s important to clean them thoroughly every day.
  • Treats you or your child can enjoy while wearing braces include soft chocolates like peanut butter cups and peppermint patties. Milkshakes, ice cream, Jell-O, cake, doughnuts, and soft cookies are also great options. These treats are easy on braces, but you’ll still want to brush and floss after enjoying them.

Navigating orthodontic treatment during the holiday season doesn’t have to lead to tooth decay. By taking a few tooth-friendly precautions and maintaining good oral health care, teeth undergoing orthodontic treatment can remain strong and healthy, ensuring a beautiful smile for years to come.
