Eating Healthy Foods While Straightening Your Teeth

Posted .

March marks the 50th anniversary of National Nutrition Month. With spring approaching, it’s the perfect time to refocus on nourishing your body and mouth while safeguarding your braces or clear aligners.

Tooth-Friendly Healthy Foods

Now is an excellent time to ensure you’re getting the nutrients essential for strong teeth and gums. Aim for foods rich in calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins C and A to protect your vital tooth enamel.

Even though tooth enamel is the hardest element in your body, it can still be damaged by harmful acids and bacteria. While wearing braces, avoid crunchy fruits, nuts, and leafy greens, as they can be difficult to remove from braces. Instead, consider taking a vitamin supplement as recommended by your doctor and enjoying these tooth-friendly foods endorsed by the American Dental Association:

  • Cheese
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Plain yogurt
  • Tofu

Please limit or avoid processed sugars like candies, chocolates, sodas, juices, and sports drinks. High-carbohydrate foods break down into simple sugars, which are just as harmful to your teeth and gums. Instead, focus on these healthier options:

Best Fruits and Vegetables While Wearing Braces

  • Bananas
  • Blueberries
  • Ripe peaches
  • Ripe pears
  • Applesauce (avoid whole or apple pieces)

Cooking your vegetables helps them retain their nutrients while making them soft and easy to eat. Consider baking, boiling, or steaming the following:

  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Potatoes
  • Squash
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Zucchini

Avoiding the wrong foods is crucial to prevent loosening or breaking braces, wires, or bands. Steer clear of sticky or crunchy foods, and maintain proper dental care by brushing at least three times a day, ideally after each meal. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean around your braces, removing any stray food particles. Follow up with thorough flossing to prevent food from lingering in your braces and wires.

Tip: Chew with your stronger molars in the back instead of your front teeth to protect your braces’ hardware.

Healthy Foods and Tips While Undergoing Clear Aligner Therapy

Dairy products are rich in calcium and protein, both of which support tooth health. Dairy also raises your mouth’s pH level, combating oral bacteria that cause cavities. Choose fruits (melons, berries, and plums) and vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes, and zucchini) high in water to keep your mouth hydrated.

  • After wearing your clear aligners for 20 to 22 hours, clean your aligner tray when you take them out to eat. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, antibacterial soap, and warm water to sanitize the trays without damaging them.
  • Always clean your teeth after eating so the aligner tray fits properly and prevents bacterial buildup that could lead to infection.
  • Set an alarm to remind yourself to wear your aligner trays for the required duration and replace them every two weeks as instructed.
  • Visit our orthodontist every four to six weeks to monitor your teeth’s progress and receive additional trays if needed to complete your aligner therapy.
